Free radical route to formation of the metal hydride complex hydridoaquobis(2,2'-bipyridine)cobalt(III)
Description
The formation of Co(bpy)2(H2O)H2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) for high spin d8 Co(I)bipyridine complexes in aqueous solutions is reported. The cobalt(I) bipyridine complexes were produced by the pulse radiolysis of aqueous CoSO4-2,2'-bipyridine mixtures. No reaction pathway attributable to a proton transfer in the complex formation was detected, and it is concluded that the hydride is formed entirely through reactions of Co(II) complexes and (bpy)H radicals
