Neutron irradiation of 237Np

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Chemistry Div., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

Irradiation of 237Np target in JRR-1 and subsequent activity measurement clarified that 238Np was formed as a consequence of neutron capture. The identification was carried out by tracing the decay and by β- and γ-spectrometry. Gamma-rays due to fission products did not interfere with the above measurements. 238Np decays into 238Pu, and therefore, 238Pu was isolated chemically from the target material after suitable cooling time, and its presence was confirmed by α-spectrometry.
