How prompt is Coulomb fission

Description
A simple model of Coulomb fission, which includes Coulomb excitation of rotational states and beta vibrational motion in a finite, two-bumped barrier, is described. This model is used to investigate the possible existence of a prompt component, in which fission occurs when target and projectile are near to the point of closest approach. Contrary to earlier suppositions the results imply that prompt fission is negligible. (author)
