Anticorrosive coatings of radioactive waste disposal containers

Description
To evaluate presently applied inspection criteria, nonmetal coatings were studied at nuclear power plants with regard to their suitability for safe radioactive waste management. Before and after an irradiation of 0,3 MGy, all six coatings selected could be decontaminated well. Decontaminability was found to be excellent of three specimens irradiated with 3 MGy and good for another three of such specimens. Following an irradiation of more than 3 MGy, damage of the coatings increased and decontaminability was further reduced. From this, it can be concluded that the high expenditure in terms of irradiation time, inspection duration and costs is in not acceptable proportion to the inspection result to be expected. Only in exceptional cases are the coatings exposed to more than 3 MGy due to the radiation of the radioactive wastes. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Verfasser fuehrten Untersuchungen zur Aussagefaehigkeit von Pruefkriterien an nichtmetallischen Beschichtungen in Kernkraftwerken zur Entsorgung radioaktiver Stoffe durch. Vor und nach 0,3 MGy Bestrahlung waren alle 6 ausgewaehlten Beschichtungen sehr gut dekontaminierbar. Von den mit 3 MGy bestrahlten Proben waren 3 sehr gut und 3 gut dekontaminierbar. Nach der Bestrahlung ueber 3 MGy hinaus nehmen die Schaedigungen an den Beschichtungen zu und die Dekontaminierbarkeit nimmt weiter ab. Daraus ist zu folgern, dass der hohe Aufwand an Bestrahlungszeit, Pruefdauer und Kosten in keinem sinnvollen Verhaeltnis zum zu erwartenden Pruefergebnis steht. Ferner werden Beschichtungen durch Strahlung von radioaktiven Reststoffen nur in Ausnahmefaellen hoeher als 3 MGy belastet. (orig.)Additional details
