Temporal and spatial characteristics of the muon component of large air showers

Description

Detailed information is presented on the spatial and temporal characteristics of muons in large cosmic ray showers. The data have been obtained from computer simulations based upon a simple pionization model for air shower development and they incorporate a realistic treatment of the propagation of the many slow muons through the atmosphere. The relevance of such data to measurements of the primary particle atomic mass number is discussed. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Es wird eine genaue Information ueber die raeumlichen und zeitlichen Charakteristiken der Myonen in grossen kosmischen Schauern gegeben. Die Daten ergaben sich aus Computersimulationen auf der Grundlage eines einfachen Modells der Schauerentwicklung und sie schliessen eine realistische Behandlung der Ausbreitung vieler langsamer Myonen in der Atmosphaere ein. Es wird die Relevanz solcher Daten fuer die Messung der Massenzahl primaerer Teilchen diskutiert. (orig.)
