Simultaneos determination of absorbed doses due to beta and gamma radiations with CaSO4: Dy produced at Ipen

Description

Due to the Goiania radiological accident, it was necessary to develop urgently a dosimeter in order to evaluate, simultaneously, beta and gamma absorbed doses, due to 137Cs radiations. Therefore, the Dosimetric Material Production Laboratory of IPEN developed a simple, practical, light and low cost badge using small thickness (0,20mm) thermoluminescent CaSO4: Dy pellets produced by the same laboratory. This pellets are adequate for beta radiation detection. These dosimeters were worn by some IPEN technicians who worked in Goiania city, and were used to evaluate the external and internal contaminations presented by the accident victims interned at the Hospital Naval Marcilio Dias. Abstract (Portuguese)

Como consequencia do acidente radiologico de Goiania, surgiu a necessidade urgente de se desenvolver um dosimetro capaz de avaliar, simultaneamente, as doses absorvidas de radiacao beta e gama do isotopo radioativo 137Cs, que e um emissor beta-gama. Assim foi desenvolvido pelo Laboratorio de Producao de Materiais Dosimetricos do IPEN um porta-dosimetros simples, pratico, leve e de baixo custo, utilizando as pastilhas termoluminescentes de pequena espessura (0,20mm), apropriadas para deteccao de radiacao beta, produzidas pelo mesmo laboratorio. Esses dosimetros foram utilizados tanto por alguns tecnicos do IPEN que prestaram servico em Goiania, como tambem serviram para avaliar as contaminacoes interna e externa apresentadas por algumas vitimas do acidente internadas no Hospital Naval Marcilio Dias.
