Radiation mechanisms
Description
Exposure of thallous salts to high-energy radiation yields Tlsup(II) centres together with paramagnetic centres derived from the anions which show strong charge-transfer interaction with neighbouring thallous ions. Previous work on thallous acetate and nitrate is extended to the perchlorate, and to the corresponding Tlsup(III) salts. The latter all gave Tlsup(II) but centres derived from the anions generally failed to show any hyperfine interaction with neighbouring cations despite the high positive charge. The nature of the radicals detected and their mode of formation are discussed. (author)
