Description

High-energy photons from cosmic gamma bursts should be observed from outer space probes. The history is outlined of the study of the bursts. They probably are compact objects of a diameter of less than 1,000 km from the immediate vicinity of the Sun, obviously neutron stars. The basic mechanisms of the production of bursts include the accretion of matter or the transformation of the inner stellar structure. The possibilities are discussed of measuring neutron star magnetic fields. (M.D.). 4 figs
