Role of Fish Oil on Electrophysiological Variations in Rats Exposed to Sodium Fluoride and/or Gamma Rays

Description

The impacts of environmental and occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and to long-term intake of high levels of fluoride had been connected to severe health problems. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the possible protective effect of fish oil (rich in omega-3 fatty acids) on sodium fluoride (NaF) and gamma (γ) rays induced electrophysiological changes in the visual regions of rat's brain. The results revealed that whole body exposure to γ- radiation at 6 Gy applied as fractionated dose (1.5 Gy x 4 times) and/or chronic treatment with NaF solution (0.13 mg/Kg/day) for a period of 28 days, increased the mean power amplitude of different electroencephalograph (EEG) bands. Fish oil treatment attenuated the negative effect of the above mentioned parameters. The beneficial role of fish oil could be correlated to its ability in quenching free radicals and scavenging reactive oxygen species thus, improving the physiological function of brain
