A direct method of measuring polarisation of a slow neutron beam
Description
A description is given of the measurement of the degree of polarisation of a beam of neutrons which has been polarised by reflection from a magnetised cobalt mirror. Use is made of the separation effect of the neutron beam in a strong non-uniform magnetic field (Stern-Gerlach's experiment on the neutron). By measuring the intensities of the separated components of the beam, it is possible to make a direct measurement of the polarisation with an accuracy which is only limited by the statistical errors in the measurements. A diagram of the experiment is shown. (U.K.)
