Description

The superconducting transition of ultra-high purity niobium is investigated to estimate precisely the superconducting transition temperature (ST temperature) of the ideal material. The influence of various factors on the ST temperature of the samples investigated (T76/sup c/ = (9.2885 +- 0.002) K) is determined by comparing both, the transitions of samples with a quite different crystal quality (single crystals and polycrystalline wires) and of samples purified by different techniques (chemical and electrolytic refining). The results show that the modern techniques for the production of ultra-high-purity niobium yield samples, the ST temperatures of which are modified by only a few 0.1 mK compared with the ST temperature of the ideal material.
