Anisotropy analysis of the data measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory

Description

This thesis is focused in the development of analysis methods of data measured by the Pierre Auger Observatory's surface array.The Auger Observatory is being built in Malargue, Mendoza and its objective is to detect ultra high energy cosmic rays (E > 1018eV) in order to understand their origin, propagation and to be able to identify their sources.Chapter 1 is a summary of current cosmic rays' theory.It includes details about the energy spectrum of cosmic rays, acceleration sites, forms of acceleration, chemical composition of cosmic rays, the GZK cutoff, magnetic lensing and experiments.Following in Chapter 2 deflection as a function of energy, using the equation of small deflections to first or second order, is analyzed, and the energy range where is approximation is valid is determined.Then, the case of multiple images, which appear when a caustic crosses the position of a source, is studied.Two simulations of cosmic rays from point sources and propagating through a realistic model of the galactic magnetic field were used.Principal and secondary images were analyzed in order to extract information concerning their sources and the magnetic fields they passed through.In Chapter 3 the Minimal Spanning Tree method (MST) used for the detection of filamentary structures is studied.This method was adapted to the analysis of cosmic rays' arrival directions, considering that the detector only observes a part of the sky, with a non uniform exposure and that the density of events depends on exposure.Moreover, the correlation between energy and position is analyzed including now experimental errors in the simulations. Correlated events with experimental errors plus background are simulated and methods of extracting the correlated structure, identifying its source and deducing information about the magnetic field are determined.Finally, conclusions are made, highlighting the most relevant results

Abstract (Spanish)

La tesis esta centrada en el desarrollo de metodos para el analisis de los datos provistos por los detectores de superficie del Observatorio Pierre Auger.El Observatorio Auger se encuentra en construccion en Malargue, Mendoza y su objetivo es detectar los rayos cosmicos de las mayores energias (E > 1018eV) con el fin de comprender su origen, los mecanismos de propagacion, asi como de identificar sus fuentes.ElCapitulo 1 es un resumen de la teoria de rayos cosmicos actual.Incluye detalles sobre el espectro en energia, sitios y formas de aceleracion, composicion quimica, el efecto GZK, el efecto de lente magnetica y experimentos realizados.Luego, en el Capitulo 2, se estudia como puede modelarse la deflexion en funcion de la energia utilizando la ecuacion de pequenas deflexiones a primer o segundo orden y se determina el rango de energia donde la aproximacion es valida.Despues se analiza el caso de imagenes multiples que aparecen cuando una caustica cruza la posicion de la fuente.Para ello se utilizan dos simulaciones de imagenes de fuentes puntuales de rayos cosmicos propagandose en un modelo realista del campo magnetico galactico.Se analizan las imagenes principales y secundarias de forma tal de poder inferir informacion sobre sus fuentes y los campos magneticos que atravesaron.En elCapitulo 3 se estudia un metodo para la deteccion de estructuras filamentarias denominado Minimal Spanning Tree(MST), adaptado para el estudio de direcciones de arribo de rayos cosmicos, teniendo en cuenta que el detector solo observa una parte del cielo, con una exposicion no homogenea y que la densidad de eventos es funcion de la exposicion.A su vez, se buscara determinar la correlacion entre posicion y energia incluyendo ahora errores experimentales en las simulaciones.Para ello se colocan eventos correlacionados mas eventos de fondo, se intenta extraer la estructura correlacionada, identificar su fuente, deducir informacion sobre el campo magnetico y se compara con simulaciones que no tienen agregadas un error experimental.Finalmente, se realizan conclusiones sobre lo estudiado y se resumen los resultados mas relevantes
