Description
A microscopic meson-quark cluster model (MQCM) is used to calculate the deuteron (d) wave function and to evaluate the charge monopole, quadrupole and magnetic dipole form factors as well as the tensor polarization for elastic ed scattering. We have also investigated the importance of non-locality of the pion exchange force arising out of pion exchange between the quarks. An equivalent description in terms of loacal pion exchange between the nucleons is indeed justified, provided the one gluon exchange interaction is adjusted to give the mass splitting of the delta and nucleon without pion. Quark exchange effects on the electromagnetic current are found to give sizeable contributions for the spin part of the current at high momentum transfer (q > 4 fm-1). This is shown in the magnetic form factor B(q), which is in agreement with the most recent experiments. (orig.)
