A barium fluoride crystal calorimeter for the SSC
Description
The history of High Energy Physics over the last 20 years has shown that precision measurements of leptons and photons have been a key factor in most important discoveries in the field. Examples are the discovery of the J/ψ, Υ, W±, and Z0. The most important discoveries at the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) could result from the detection of entirely new phenomena at the 1 TeV scale, outside of the Standard Model or its simplest extensions. These discoveries could appear as new multilepton final-states, or as new configurations of leptons and jets. The ability to distinguish and precisely measure electrons and photons, as well as muons, at the SSC will allow isolate the new physics signals from the backgrounds of the 'Standard' physics, such as the inclusive production of Z's and W's together with jets. Should the Standard Model survive in the SSC era, then the highest mass resolution, and good acceptance will be required to detect the Higgs, through its distinctive decays into multileptons or photons. The L* experiment is one of two large general purpose detectors proposed for the SSC experimental program. To maximize the discovery potential, the L* detector has been designed to be a precision lepton photon detector. A precision electromagnetic calorimeter, as well as a precision muon system, are the two principle ingredients of the proposed L* detector. This report presents a design study of a high precision barium fluoride (BaF2) crystal calorimeter for the proposed L* experiment at the Superconducting Super Collider. The excellent time, position and energy resolution of the BaF2 crystal calorimeter will provide great discovery potential at the SSC
