Monte Carlo calculation of W values of 10eV-10keV electrons in gases
Description
Calculations of the W value of 10 eV to 10 keV electrons in N2 gas were undertaken using the Monte Carlo transport code MCLEP developed by myself. The basic data concerning N2 molecule necessary for calculations were collected from a lot of previous works. Partial ionization cross sections for five orbitals were evaluated by the Seltzer's formula based on Weizsacker-Williams methods. Calculated W values below 100 eV were in good agreement with measurements by Combecher. The W value of 34.8 eV/ip at the high energy limit was obtained, which is identical with that recommended by ICRU report. This code makes it possible to carry out exact calculations of W values in various gases. (author)
