Method to accelerate and increase the solubility of plutonium dioxide and uranium/plutonium oxide fuels and their unsoluble residues in nitric acid

Description

The solubility of plutonium dioxide and mixed uranium/plutonium oxides in nitric acid can be increased during the reprocessing of nuclear fuels if the metal charge constitutes at least 200 g Pu (or Pu + U) per litre of the solution. The solids should be dissolved in nitric acid (preferably 7 molar HNO3) in the form of plutonium nitrate to a level of at least 100 g Pu per litre. The plutonium nitrate may then be removed from the production stream of a reprocessing operation. The plutonium acts as an autocatalyst. Examples and diagrams serve to illustrate this method. (RB)

Abstract (German)

(RB)
