Relevant aspects of radiological safety in project RA-10

Several aspects of radiological safety were developed from the beginning of the Project to the end of the Basic Engineering phase. These can be gathered as follows: - The proposed Radiological Protection Plan including the CNEA policy; organization, staff and responsibilities; facilities, equipment and instrumentation; procedures and training. - Radiation sources in the facility. - Relevant design aspects to minimise doses to operation staff including access control and zoning, shielding supply, ventilation systems and radiation monitoring. - Radioactive waste management approach including reduction of generated waste and controlled management of any type of waste. - Dose estimation during normal operation, both for operation staff and public members. A very important number of files were prepared, where doses estimation, shielding, waste management, zoning, etc., were recorded. Chapter 12 "Occupational Radiological Protection" of the Preliminary Safety Report was compiled from all this information. Also, the Preliminary Internal Emergency Plan and relevant aspects of the External Emergency Plan, as well as Chapter 20 "Emergency Planning and Preparation" of the Preliminary Safety Report, were prepared. In the latter, information is provided in order to assure that necessary actions, in case of the occurrence of a radiological emergency in the facility, are properly planned and can be taken with appropriate equipment foreseen during the design phase. Necessary agreements with external organizations, in order to face an emergency situation, were also identified. (author)
