The levels of radionuclides and heavy metals in water and sediments from gibraltar strait and sebou river

Interest in the protection of the environment has greatly increased in recent years, in relation to all aspects of human activities. Such interest has been accompanied by the development and application of various mean of assessing and managing the many forms of human impact upon it. The discharges of the urban and industrial wastes on the rivers Mghogha, Souani and Sebou can reach the Bay of Tangier and the Atlantic ocean. This presents a serious impact on the environment and the public. The objective of this study consists in determining the levels of the radioactivity as well as the concentration of heavy metals in all the area in order to evaluate the radiological and chemical impact of the residues of non nuclear industries on the Bay of Tangier and Sebou river. Surface water and sediment samples are collected from Mghogha, Souani and Sebou rivers and also the Bay of Tangier. Grossα and grossβ radioactivity levels in the samples were determined and the concentrations of heavy metals in samples was determined by ICP-MS, en collaboration with Seville University
