Absolute 1s→2P excitation cross sections of 4P and 2P states for 30 MeV O5+

  • 1. Kansas State Univ., Manhattan, KS (United States)

Description

The absolute cross sections for the production of the O5+, (ls2s2p) 4P and 2P states were measured by observing Auger electrons at zero degrees in high resolution for 30 MeV projectile energy. The measurement was done for H2, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe targets to determine the dependence of the 4p and 2p cross sections on the target Z. Excitation to the 4p-state requires a spin flip and is formed primarily via an electron interaction while the 2p state at this energy can be formed via both electron-nucleus and electron-electron interactions. Therefore, the authors would expect different target Z dependence for the 4P and the 2P cross sections. They observed, however, similar behavior for the two cross sections
