Ultraviolet-B-effects on plants: Spectra of harmful effects, primary damage and UV protective mechanisms

Description
In two model systems of higher plants, damage caused by ultraviolet-B-radiation was analysed as to its mechanism of action and the spectral quantum efficiency. These investigations were to provide information on the relevance of such UV effects in cases of increased ultraviolet-B-irradiation owing to the destruction of ozone. The results indicate the very high tolerance of the plants to ultraviolet-B-radiation which obviously is the result of very effective protective mechanisms, and show at the same time that potential damage must already be reckoned with, given the current share of ultraviolet-B-radiation in solar radiation. Should ultraviolet-B-radiation be increased, then indirect damage to the plant from the destruction of ultraviolet protective mechanisms through UV-B-radiation will probably constitute a particular risk. An zwei Modellsystemen hoeherer Pflanzen wurden UV-B-Schaeden hinsichtlich des Wirkungsmechanismus und der spektralen Quantenwirksamkeit analysiert. Mit diesen Untersuchungen sollte Aufschluss ueber die Relevanz solcher UV-Effekte im Falle einer durch Ozonzerstoerung erhoehten UV-B-Einstrahlung gewonnen werden. Die Ergebnisse weisen auf die hohe, offensichtlich auf sehr effektive Schutzmechanismen zurueckgehende UV-B-Toleranz von Pflanzen hin und machen gleichzeitig deutlich, dass eine potentielle Schaedigung bereits durch den derzeit vorliegenden UV-B-Anteil der Sonnenstrahlung gegeben ist. Im Falle einer UV-B-Zunahme duerfte ein besonderes Risiko in einer indirekten Schaedigung der Pflanze ueber die Zerstoerung von UV-Schutzmechanismen durch UV-B zu sehen sein. (orig./MG)
