An overview of current stopping power phenomena, measurements, and related topics

Description

A survey of the literature has been made to determine current trends in stopping power measurements and related phenomena. A comparison is made of the different emthods including advantages and disadvantages, relative popularity, and geographical location of the experiments themselves. The method of interposition of target foil between accelerator and detector is found to produce differential results in at least two instances that employ the time-of-flight method and the inverted Doppler shift attenuation method as an alternative. Systematic attempts to measure stopping powers by several different methods at the same laboratory have proved beneficial. Various shortcomings in the existing literature are noted, along with some unsolved problems that remain. Suggestions will be given for the best approaches to use. (orig.)
