George F. Kennan, awarded with the peace prize of the German book-trade in 1982, has in the fifties already attracted world-wide attention with his lectures resumed in this book, and given rise to violent discussions by claiming a creative policy of the West. 'Shall we, like chased animals, race from one kind of defensive means to another, the one more expensive and disgraceful than the other, hide underground today, desert our towns tomorrow, surround ourselves with complicated electronic shields the day after to-morrow, only taking care of prolonging our lives and to sacrifice everything which makes life worth living.' Kennan's questions and claims are still of timely nature to the peace movement as well as for the disarmament controversy, even if the technical and military conditions have changed. (orig.)

George F. Kennan, 1982 mit dem Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet, hat mit seinen in diesem Buch zusammengefassten Vorlesungen schon in den 50er Jahren weltweit Aufsehen erregt und mit seiner Forderung nach einer schoepferischen Politik des Westens heftige Diskussionen ausgeloest. Sollen wir wie gehetzte Tiere von einem Verteidigungsmittel zum anderen rasen, eines kostspieliger und entwuerdigender als das andere, uns heute unter der Erde verkriechen, morgen unsere Staedte im Stich lassen, uebermorgen uns mit komplizierten elektronischen Schildern umgeben, nur darauf bedacht, laenger am Leben zu bleiben und alles preiszugeben was das Leben ueberhaupt lebenswert macht. - Kennans Fragen und Forderungen sind fuer die Friedensbewegung wie fuer die Abruestungsdiskussion nach wie vor aktuell, auch, wenn sich die technischen und militaerischen Voraussetzungen veraendert haben.
