Electron-probe microanalysis of highly radioactive materials. Equipment and techniques

Description

In the scope of investigation of highly active material, the necessity of analysing very small volume in a metallic or ceramic matrix compelled authors to imagine and built up a 'shielded' electron micro-probe for samples with a maximal activity of 4 Ci of O.75 MeV. This equipment, derived from CAMECA MS 46 micro-probe has been elaborated with respect to the following conditions: a) total security for operators; that means for a maximal activity of sample, irradiation intensity on surface of equipment must be inferior to 2. 5 mrad/h, b) possibilities of analysis must be nearest to that, of the CAMECA MS 46 micro-probe. c) maintenance of 'shielded micro-probe' must not be more delicate, than that of a standard equipment. This equipment will be finished during 1970 and put into service at CEA, during the second half of 1970. (authors)

Abstract (French)

Dans le cadre des examens de produits tres radioactifs, la necessite de pouvoir analyser ou doser dans de tres petits volumes les constituants ou les impuretes contenus dans une matrice metallique ou ceramique a conduit les auteurs a etudier et a realiser un microanalyseur electronique 'blinde' pouvant recevoir des echantillons presentant une radioactivite maximale de 4 Ci de 0, 75 MeV. Cet appareil directement issu de la microsonde CAMECA MS 46 a ete etudie en respectant les imperatifs suivants: a) la securite des operateurs devra etre totale, c'est-a-dire que pour 1'echantillon d'activite maximale, l'intensite d'irradiation a la surface de l'appareil devra etre inferieure a 2,5 mrad/h. b) les possibilites d'analyse devront etre les plus proches possible de celle de la 'microsonde' CAMECA MS 46, c) l'entretien de la 'microsonde blindee' ne devra pas etre plus delicat que celui de l'appareil standard. La realisation de cet appareil est actuellement en cours. Il sera mis en service au CEA au debut du deuxieme semestre 1970. (auteurs)
