Blankets for use in thermonuclear devices
Description
Purpose: To sufficiently increase the tritium breeding ratio, enable the production of tritium by the amount consumed and reduce the thickness without impairing the tritium breeding ratio. Constitution: A neutron breeding layer comprising those materials with a great neutron multiplying effect such as lead is disposed to a region in adjacent with plasmas, and tritium breeding material comprising lithium or lithium compounds and reacting with multiplied neutrons to produce tritium is situated on the side of the neutron multiplying layer remote from the plasmas. A tritium breeding intermediate layer and neutron breeding intermediate layer are disposed between both of them such that the tritium breeding intermediate layer situates on the side of the neutron breeding layer. Beryllium is used for the neutron breeding intermediate layer. As a result, 46.2 cm thickness of the blanket for obtaining tritium breeding ratio of 1.3 can be decreased to 25 cm thereby reducing the thickness by about 21 cm. (Kamimura, M.)
