Beneficial and adverse effects of irradiation in patients repeatedly subjected to high-dosage treatment
Description
During the period between 1978 and 1983 a total of 156 patients showing different types of tumours were subjected to high-dosage radiotherapy. The patients were treated repeatedly for primary or recurrent tumours using a radiation dose of >79 Gy. Each of the three largest groups, which were mammary carcinomas (33), cerebral tumours (25) and orohypopharyngeal tumours (22), was analysed individually. In the majority of patients the local effects of this radiotherapy were such that total or at least partial remission of the primary or recurrent tumour appeared most likely. In the groups receiving doses in the lower range the results were just as good as those achieved in subjects exposed to high doses. The survival times determined here for bearers of mammary or cerebral carcinomas were better than the relevant values given in the literature. (orig./MG)

Es wurden 156 Patienten von 1978 bis 1983 mit verschiedenen Tumoren hochdosiert bestrahlt. Es wurden Strahlendosen von ≥79 Gy bei mehrfachen Rezidiv- und Palliativbehandlungen gegeben. Die drei groessten Gruppen - Mammakarzinome (33), Hirntumore (25) und Oro-Hypopharynxtumore (22) - wurden im einzelnen ausgewertet. Fuer die Mehrzahl der mit Rezidiven und palliativ bestrahlten Patienten ist lokal mit einer Vollremission bzw. zumindest mit einer Teilremission zu rechnen. Es wurden in allen Gruppen mit niedrigeren Dosierungen gleich gute Ergebnisse erzielt wie mit einer hohen Dosis. Diese extrem hohe Strahlendosis wurde gut toleriert. Fuer die Gruppe der Mammakarzinome und Hirntumoren ergaben sich verglichen mit der Literatur verlaengerte Ueberlebenszeiten. Der wiederholte Einsatz der Radiotherapie zur lokalen Kontrolle eines Tumorgeschehens, sei es als Rezidiv oder Tumorprogress, ist gerechtfertigt. (orig./MG)
