Abstract By performing numerical hydrodynamical calculations we examine the hypothesis that pulsars can produce supernova explosions-that the electromagnetic energy radiated by a newly formed rotating neutron star can drive off the remaining envelope of a red-giant star whose initial mass lies in the range 3-8 M0. The initial configuration is taken to be a model of a red-giant envelope with mass M8n in which a neutron star with rotational energy E is embedded. The outward motion of the envelope is followed numerically, through a phase in which the material is confined to a relatively thin spherical shell, up to the point where the optical thickness of the shell becomes small. Radiative energy losses from the surface become important during the later stages of the calculation; the resulting light curves for a number of assumed values of Men and E are compared with observations of supernovae. Reasonable agreement can be obtained with a number of different observed properties, but best agreement occurs for masses slightly less than 3 M0. In all cases, the predicted time for the light to rise to maximum is somewhat too long to be consistent with observations. It is suggested that the calculated rise time will be significantly shortened if the presence of a dust-laden circumstellar envelope around the original red giant is taken into account.
