Topics of SNF safety, storage, transport control and handling

Conditions for long-term storage and transport of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from various energy and research reactors, of radioactive wastes and other nuclear materials, as well as for handling of such materials in general, are defined by requirements of national regulations and IAEA recommendation submitted to transport, packing and other packages and installations of such kind. These are estimated not only for long-term, up to 50 years SNF storage, but also for SNF transport at long distances, therefore they should withstand enough stringent conditions of dynamic tests simulating emergency situation during conveyance. In addition, tightness and radiation protection of the item should be preserved at pre-set level of safety in all cases and under any conditions. This study reviews reliability and quality control for protection of modern shipping and packing casks with metal and concrete shell in more detail. Actually, small size, portable and what is more important, transportable SNF storage represents shipping and packing cask. (authors)
