The prevalence, course and management of some benign oesophageal diseases in the Black population
Description
The results of a 20-year prospective investigation of benign diseases of the oesophagus in the Black population attending the Surgical Gastro-intestinal Motility Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, are presented. The modes of presentation in this small group of patients are no different from those in any other ethnic groups, and as in the other groups the incidence of complications is low and the general response of patients to conservative treatment is excellent. The reasons for the lower prevalence of these diseases in the Black population than in other ethnic groups are conjectural
