Effects of the 19th Peoples Republic of China nuclear test in northern Japan

Peoples Republic of China conducted its 19th nuclear test on September 26, 1976. Reuter's News Agency reported on the 27th that the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) had detected an explosion in the general area of the Lop Nor testing site in Sinkiang Province and described it as being in the range of magnitude 20-200 k tons in the atmosphere. Japan, and especially the northern part of the country, has a specific geographical and meteorological condition and is an area of high accumulation of radioactive fallouts, therefore and investigation on what conditions have been brought about by tests is important not only in the relationship to pollution but in the characteristics of stratospheric fallout on the entire earth. We studied the contamination of the environment and the effects on living organism by radioactive fallouts from the 19th nuclear test. The survey was conducted for about three months to clarify the status quo of contamination of the environment. (auth.)
