Electron cyclotron resonance ion source control system for LEHIPA

Description

An ECR proton Ion source of 50 keV, 30 mA has been indigenously design, developed and commissioned for the 20 MeV, 30 mA Low Energy High Intensity Proton Accelerator (LEHIPA). The three electrode extraction geometry has been used for ion extraction in ECR Ion Source. Before commissioning of ion source for LEHIPA long term operation of ion source, ion beam characterization in term of proton fraction and beam emittance, pulse mode operation of ion source and beam stability and repeatability is analyzed. System is satisfactorily working for eight hours during LEBT Beam trials. This paper is regarding control system of ECR Ion source and integration of it with Integrated Control system of LEHIPA. The ECR Ion source control system is a computer based control system. Main components of the ECR ion source are microwave generation, plasma chamber, solenoid magnets and power supplies, extraction electrodes and power supplies, beam measuring device and vacuum system. All electronics devices have their built in microprocessor base electronic interface, which can be remotely accessed by serial, Ethernet or analog interface link. Integrated Control system of LEHIAP is using MODBUS on TCP/IP is a standard communication protocol. We are using PLC with DAQ function facility as a standard unit for automation. In initial stage LEHIPA will work in pulse mode. For pulsing the system ECR Ion source is pulsed. Details of ion beam pulsing will be discussed in paper. (author)
