Blood stem cell changes as an indicator of a radiation exposure and prognostic relevance

Description

The aim of the research study was to examine to what extent changes in the blood picture will allow conclusions to be drawn for the degree of damage to the bone marrow and for the recovery capacity of haemopoiesis following different radiation exposures. Changes in the granulocyte counts allow to see direct relationships to the bone marrow injury and regeneration processes at various radiation exposures. The same applies to the platelet count. Under specific exposure conditions, however, the lymphocyte concentration alternatives are hardly suitable for a differentiated assessment of the functional state of blood cell formation. (orig./MG)

Abstract (German)

Es war das Ziel des Forschungsvorhabens zu untersuchen, inwieweit Veraenderungen des Blutbildes Rueckschluesse auf den Schaedigungsgrad des Knochenmarks und das Erholungsvermoegen der Haemopoese nach unterschiedlichen Strahleneinwirkungen ermoeglichen. Bei verschiedenen Strahlenexpositionen lassen die Veraenderungen der Granulozytenwerte direkte Beziehungen zur Schaedigung des Knochenmarks und den Regenerationsvorgaengen erkennen. Dasselbe trifft auch auf die Thrombozytenzahlen zu. Die Alternativen der Lymphozytenkonzentration sind dagegen bei bestimmten Expositionsbedingungen fuer eine differenzierte Beurteilung des Funktionszustandes der Haemopoese wenig geeignet. (orig./MG)
