Calculation of the cross section for C iv-H charge exchange: significance for interstellar x-rays/cosmic-ray particles

  • 1. Department of Physics and Materials Research Laboratory, University of Illinois, Urbana

Description

Calculations are performed to determine the cross section for the charge-exchange collision C+3+H→C+2+H+ at 0.1 to 1.75 eV incident energies. From these results a rate coefficient approximately-greater-than 10-9cm3s-1 at gas temperatures 1000< or =T (K) < or =20,000 is estimated. Recent observations have focused on the abundance of C+3 as an indicator for the low-energy X-ray and cosmic-ray particle flux in the Galaxy. Inclusion of charge exchange with the rate calculated here invalidates these interpretations
