Description
The institute, INS was closed after over 41 years of activities and converted into a new organization, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization from the fiscal year of 1997. It is aimed that this reorganization will provide a strong base for the future development of accelerator science. There was much to do during FY 1996, the last year for INS to prepare for this transition besides the scientific activities as well as the final refinement of JHP planning. This report describes details concerning the accomplishments made by each research group during the last year. Both the SF cyclotron and the 1.3 GeV electron synchrotron operated smoothly. A new radioactive nuclear beam facility was successfully tuned. It consists of a long beam transport and a series of heavy-ion linacs. In a test, unstable nitrogen ions were produced at the SF cyclotron. They were transferred to the linac to be accelerated up to 1 MeV per nucleon. The TARN 2 cooler ring was improved by replacing the electron cooling system with a were powerful one using a superconductive magnet, resulting in a better energy resolution of the beam. (M.N.)
