Infrared study on β-radiolysis in poly(vinyl alcohol)-T2O system
- 1. Toyama Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Science
Description
β-Radiolysis of poly(vinyl alcohol) by tritium was studied by means of infrared spectroscopy for a period of 5 months. New bands at 1706, 1378 and 940 cm-1 were attributed to ketonic groups formed in polymer chains. Formation of methyl groups was found from the new band at 2960 cm-1. Changes in absorbance with time suggest that methyl groups are formed secondarily by a scission of -CH2-CO-CH2- skeletons and a successive reaction with H. A scheme of β(γ)-radiolysis over a long time period is proposed. (orig.)
