Dry storage of spent fuel elements - a critical comment
Description
The concept of dry storage of spent fuel elements, which is an accepted method in the Federal Republic of Germany, is critically reviewed, taking the transport and storage cask CASTOR II a of the firm Nukem/TN as a model. This cask can accept nine PWR spent fuel elements from the Biblis reactor. The technical design of the cask is criticised, especially with respect to its function as a safe containment of the highly radioactive inventory. Doubts are expressed whether the wall and the bottom of the cask will reliably fulfil this function. (DG)
