A new plasma excitation source for ICPMS with very low argon consumption (UMAS)

Full text: Conventional ICPMS instruments consume typically more than 12 L min-1 argon most of which is not necessary for plasma generation but for torch cooling. Recently, we have managed to develop a plasma excitation source for ICPOES (SHIP torch) that provides analytical figures of merit comparable to those of conventional ICPOES systems by consuming only 0.6 L min-1 Ar. This oral presentation will present the successful transfer development of the principle SHIP design to ICPMS. The analytical figures of merit of the so-called UMAS detector (Universal MAss spectrometric detector for Speciation analysis) and first speciation analytical applications will be presented.
