Observation of fractional spin degrees of freedom in an S = 1 linear chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet

  • 1. Inst. of Physical and Chemical Research, RIKEN, Wako, Saitama 351-01 (Japan)

Description

This paper reports on the typical spin of one linear chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet, Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4) containing a small amount of Cu2+ by electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. The ESR results are successfully explained by the model that the valence bonds in the valence bond solid state are broken at the Cu2+ sites resulting in fractional spin degrees of freedom at the Ni2+ sites neighboring the Cu2+
