Heat transfer test for the development of a high-temperature capsule using an LBE alloy as a thermal medium

From the heat transfer experiments for the development of a high-temperature capsule using an LBE as a thermal medium, the following results have been obtained: In an effort to enable the required design and performance of an LBE capsule and to provide design recommendations for establishing the fabrication techniques for LBE capsule development, a capsule mock-up, which was designated as 09M-01K, was designed and manufactured. Heat transfer experiments were also performed at a single channel test loop using a full-scale mock-up of an LBE capsule. The thermal behavior of a capsule mock-up was investigated against variations of heat loads and mixed gas ratios. From the test results, it was found that the specimen temperature of the mock-up increased linearly with an increase of heat input. The regional temperature distribution of the mock-up in the horizontal direction was relatively uniform and less than 30 ,deg, C, which can provide a more favorable environment for a high-temperature test, and a maximum controllable temperature range with variations in the mixing gas ratio was 150 .deg. C. This appeared to match well with the expectation from the data calculated by the ANSYS analysis. The design modification of an LBE capsule, that was based on the gathered information from the heat transfer experiments, was made to enhance its safety. Recommendations based on the difficulties encountered in the manufacturing process of a capsule mock-up were also suggested
