Description

The thorium and R.E. minerals of Morro do Ferro are classified into three types: 1) primary minerals not resistant to weathering as thorium rich R.E. silicates or allanite, gelzircon, thorogummite and thorium bearing fluorite, and the resistant minerals such as monazite, cheralite, microlite, huttanite and zircon, all being relatively rich in thorium; 2) secondary minerals , the most important being thorbastnae-site; 3) thorium and R.E. oxides or hydroxides produced by composition of primary and secondary minerals which are mostly absorbed on clay components of soil. This state is responsible for most of the mobilization of thorium in soluble or particulate forms. (Author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Os minerais de torio e terras raras (T.R.) do Morro do Ferro sao classificados da seguinte maneira: 1) minerais primarios sem resistencia ao inteperismo como silicatos de T.R. ricos em torio ou allanita, gelzircao, torogunmita e fluorita torifera, sendo os minerais mais resistentes:; monazita, cheralita, microlita, hutanita e zircao, todos eles ricos em torio; 2) minerais secundarios dos quais o mais importante e torbastnaesita; 3) oxidos ou hidroxidos de torio e T.R. produzidos pela decomposicao de minerais primarios e secundarios que sao, na sua maioria, absorvidos por componentes argilosos do solo. Este estado e o mais responsavel pela mobilizacao de torio em formas soluveis ou particuladas. (D.M.)
