Glass vitrification of nuclear wastes
Description
Bechtel has been retained by Du Pont to design and engineer the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) to vitrify high-level radioactive wastes. DWPF will collect the sludge from the bottom of storage tanks, wash it down and chemically neutralize it, and mix it with pulverized glass called frit, in a melter vessel where it becomes a molten homogeneous mass. The molten glass is poured into a 2 ft. diameter by 10 ft. tall stainless steel container. Operating techniques and facilities are described in this paper
