Mean and individual radiation exposures of the staff of Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center 1969-1978

  • 1. Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe G.m.b.H. (Germany, F.R.). Hauptabteilung Kerntechnische Betriebe

Description

A general outline account is given of radiation monitoring carried out on all staff (not only occupationally exposed workers) of the Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre 1969/1978. Glass dosimeters are used. It is concluded that 1) ICRP recommendations on dose equivalent limits for workers are met in general 2) The average annual occupational exposure of radiation workers is remarkably low, 1.6 mSv 3) The number of persons with annual exposures 15 mSv is about 1%. Only a few of these individuals exceeded the 15 mSv/a value repeatedly over the decade 1969 - 1978. These statistics are not substantially altered by inclusion of results obtained from routine monitoring of all persons handling unsealed sources, by whole body or lung counting or excretion measurements.
