Chemical composition of stars in globular clusters: a glimpse at the contribution by population II
Description
The author has completed abundance analyses of stars in M4, M13, M22 and M71 from high resolution CCD spectra obtained at the Mt. Palomar coude spectrograph. Elements observed include the light metals from sodium through titanium, the iron peak, and lines of OI and CN. In addition, CO bands in stars in M4 and M22 have been analyzed by V. V. Smith (University of Texas) for the 12C/13C ratio. The derived abundances show significant departures from solar ratios for carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and the light metals, sodium and aluminum. The 12C/13C ratio allows us to calculate the percentage of CNO processed material that has mixed with the original material in the stellar atmosphere. Of particular interest are CNO-deficient stars in M4 and M13 and the dichotomy of C and N abundances in M22. These anomalies within clusters appear to be indicative of the original composition of the star rather than nucleosynthesis and mixing within the observed star
