Mechanisms of heavy ion reactions from a macroscopic viewpoint
Description
Theoretical considerations concerning the height of the fusion barriers for heavy ion reactions and limits to the fusion cross sections are discussed. Areas of current investigation related to the dynamics of heavy ion reactions are qualitatively described. The application of the rotating liquid drop model to survival of fused systems is discussed. Experimental results which are relevant to the various models are described and interpreted in terms of the limitations predicted by the various models. Predictions as to limiting cross sections for the production of new proton rich nuclei by an evaporation mechanism are also described. (author)
