Production and characteristics of 81Rb for myocardial studies

Description
A description is given of a method for the production of 81Rb which eliminates virtually all radioactive contaminants, greatly enhances spatial resolution and reduces radiation dose to the patient. The parent 81Sr (25 m) was produced from inexpensive, readily obtainable rubidium chloride target by the 85Rb(p,5n) 81Sr nuclear reaction, followed by separation by precipitation of 81SrCO3, The 81SrC03 was dissolved in acid, allowed to decay for about 100 min and the remaining SrC03 reprecipitated. The filtrate contained 81Rb with less than 0.01% of other radioisotopes. Bar phantoms and in vivo studies of dog myocardium were used to assess spatial resolution. (U.K.)
