Accelerate resource characterization and exploration of natural hydrogen in France
Description
France has been a pioneer in promoting natural hydrogen as an energy source and/or feedstock. IFPEN has been working on the subject since 2011, and for the past five years French research, in particular UPPA, the University of Grenoble and IPGP3, has been leading the field. At the beginning of 2022, France recognized native hydrogen as a resource in its mining code, and the first exploration permits have been filed. At the same time, countries historically more comfortable with exploiting underground resources, such as the United States and Australia, have become aware of the potential of hydrogen resources on their territory and are accelerating the development of this new sector. The geology of certain regions of France is conducive to the presence of this resource. The aim of this note is to highlight the points that could help to develop this potential more rapidly, and to position France's industry in this new ecosystem
