Design, manufacturing and loading in the MIR reactor of experimental; fuel rods with accident tolerant fuel

Description

JSC 'VNIINM' has developed the technology of manufacturing accident tolerant fuel (ATF), which is the following combinations of cladding structural materials and fuel compositions: 1. E110 alloy cladding coated with chromium + UO2 fuel; 2. E110 alloy cladding coated with chromium + UMo fuel; 3. 42HNM alloy cladding + UO2 fuel; 4. 42HNM alloy cladding + UMo fuel. To manufacture the above-mentioned variants of tolerant fuel, the design of experimental fuel rods was developed, two different technologies for applying chromium coating on the cladding were designed, the composition and manufacturing technology of metallic U-Mo fuel were designed, as well as the technology for manufacturing thin claddings of 42HNM alloy for VVER and PWR size types. Pre-irradiation studies of coated E110 and 42HNM alloy claddings with U-Mo metal fuel were conducted. Thereafter 48 ATF experimental rods and two experimental fuel assemblies were manufactured by JSC 'NCCP'. Currently those experimental the ATF rods are being irradiated in the MIR reactor loop channels ('RIAR') under VVER and PWR water chemistry conditions.
