Radiochemical studies of the sorption behaviour of strontium and barium in various clays

Description

The sorption of strontium and barium on kaolinite, bentonite, and chlorite-illite mixed clay was studied by radioanalytical techniques using the batch method. The variation of the distribution ratio as a function of the metal ion loading is reported. The maximum uptake of Ba2+ was observed for the chlorite-illite clays. The experimental data were fitted to Freundlich and Dubinin-Raduskevich isotherm models. The effect of the pH on the sorption process was studied. No significant changes in the sorption behaviour of Ba2+ and Sr2+ were measured in the pH range between 3.0 and 8.5. At pH-values of 11.0 and higher however, Rd values increase, probably due to the formation of carbonate complexes
