Description
A statistical method for the analysis of the autocorrelation characteristics of the amino-acid sequences of polypeptides, considered as a whole, is presented. In order to investigate the correlation effects, it is taken advantage of the Rank test and construct the correlograms for a pool of proteins with known secondary structure by using the previously determined alpha-helical, beta-sheet and random coil potentials. It has been found that the amino acid sequences of proteins analysed as a whole are autocorrelated, and that all the analysed proteins have at least an autocorrelation order ranging between 1 and 4 due to secondary-structure effects
