Evaluation of Spent Fuel Recycling Scenario using SFR-Pyro System
Description
Ⅰ. Project Title Evaluation of Spent Fuel Recycling Scenario using Pyro-SFR System Ⅱ. Objective and Importance of the Project ○ Objective of the R&D: Feasibility study on spent fuel recycling scenario through the performance analysis of a 600MWe sodium-cooled fast reactor connected with pyroprocessing technology(Pyro-SFR) ○ Necessity of the R and D pyro-SFR related system is being studied as the best way to reduce amount of the spent fuels. Thus, it is needed to validate that the recycling scenario using Pyro-SFR is either feasible or not. Especially, recycle policy of CANDU spent fuel has not been determined yet, but the CANDU spent fuel needs to recycle because it is very large in quantity. So, the recycling scenarios of CANDU SF are also estimated. Ⅲ. Scope and Contents of Project ○ 600MWe transmutation sodium-cooled fast reactor design ○ Review of the recycling system information recently introduced ○ Assumption to estimate the scenario of PWR and CANDU spent fuel recycling ○ SFR performance analysis and feasibilty estimation of the recycling scenarios Ⅳ. Results of Project ○ In PWR SF recycling adopting the mass ratio of TRU and RE in charged fuel of SFR with 4 to 1, sodium void reactivity is higher than design criteria of metal fuel so the recycling scenario is not feasible. ○ If pyroprocessing performance of CANDU SF is the same as PWR's case, CANDU recycling scenario is feasible. Transmutation performance is slightly worse than PWR's, but sodium void reactivity satisfy the design criteria. ○ Depending on the RE recovery factor, one SFR can burn all the TRU generated from one CANDU reactor during SFR's design life time of 60 years. ○ Generated the mass flow data of nuclides from charge to recovery according to each scenario ○ Calculated the decay heat generation of spent fuels before and after pyroprocessing according to each scenario Ⅴ. Proposal for Applications ○ Utilization as interface data for pyroprocessing technology development ○ Suggestion for development direction of pyroprocessing and SFR's performance ○ Utilization as preliminary data to validate development of the Pyro-SFR related system.
