Transformation of nonvirus producing BALB/3T3 cells by an environmental extract
Description
Nonvirus-producing BALBc/3T3 murine cell cultures were shown to be susceptible to morphological transformation by a soot extract. This extract, based on benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) content, was several thousand times more potent in transforming cells than was pure BaP. The increased activity of the soot extract was not due to induction of an endogenous 'C' type virus. Chemical analysis identified several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) carcinogens. Based on their contribution to the total content of the extract, it appears that the increased transforming activity of the soot was due to either synergistic action between the PAHs or the presence of noncarcinogenic promoting agents
